Q1: I am a class XII science student, what course can I apply for at IISERs?

Five year BS-MS dual degree programme.

Q2: How do I get admission to the BS-MS dual degree program in IISERs?

To seek an admission, you should apply through at least one of the three channels.

(a) Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY): SA(2011)/SX(2012)/SB(2012)/SP(Passed class XII in

2012).

(b) Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2013: Students obtaining a minimum aggregate of 60%

marks in class XII and securing a place in the rank list of Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) for the

admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). For SC/ST/PD candidates the required percentage of

aggregate marks* in class XII is 55%.

(c) State and Central Boards: Students who have passed class XII in 2012 or are appearing for class XII

exam in 2013 in science stream with either

i. Aggregate marks* above or equal to the cut-off percentage declared by DST as eligibility for INSPIRE

fellowship. For OBC (Non-Creamy layer)/PD category candidates, there is 5% relaxation in the DST cut-off.

The cut-off for SC/ST candidates is 55% in class XII for all boards.

ii. Advisory note for the eligibility for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) under INSPIRE scheme.

(*) Aggregate marks = (Total marks obtained in all subjects x 100) / Maximum marks.

Q3: What is the intake of students in IISERs for BS-MS dual degree programme in 2013?

Each IISER: 150. Total: 750

Q4: Do I need to apply separately for different IISERs?

No. All five IISERs admit students through a common application and counseling process.

Q5: What is the intake through different channels?

• Up to 25% seats in each category (General/SC/ST/OBC Non-creamy) through KVPY channel.

• Up to 50% seats in each category (General/SC/ST/OBC Non-creamy) from KVPY + JEE (Advanced) channels.

• Remaining seats in each category through State and Central Boards channel based on an Aptitude Test

conducted by IISERs.

Q6: Can I apply through more than one channel?

Yes.

Q7: Do I need to apply separately for each channel?

You may apply to IISERs through multiple channels provided you meet the eligibility criteria for each of the

channels you want to apply through. It requires separate application and payment of application fee for each

channel.

Q8: Does reservation of seats apply for admission?

Yes, as per Government of India rules.

Q9: What documents are required to seek admission under OBC (Non-Creamy)/SC/ST/PD category?

Applicants seeking admission under any of the reserved categories: OBC (Non-Creamy)/ SC/ST/PD must

produce appropriate category certificate at the time of counseling. Applicants seeking admission under

OBC (Non-Creamy) category must belong to non-creamy layer of the central list of Government of India.

These candidates need to obtain non-creamy layer certificate issued by appropriate authority after

March 31, 2013 only on the prescribed format. The prescribed format for OBC(Non-Creamy)/SC/ST/PD

category certificates is available on the

Q10: How do I apply?

Application is on-line only at our admission portal www.iiser-admissions.in

Q11: When should I apply?

The on-line application facility will appear on the web site http://www.iiser-admissions.in/ as per the

application schedule for each channel. These dates are mentioned in our advertisement. See Q25 for details.

Q12: Is there an application fee?

Yes. A non-refundable application fee for each admission channel:

(1) Rs. 600/- for General/OBC/PD applicants.

(2) Rs. 300/- for SC/ST

Q13: Is there any financial support for students admitted at IISERs?

Yes. All BS-MS students are eligible for a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5000/- awarded by KVPY/INSPIRE scheme

Q14: What is the fee structure for BS-MS programme at IISERs?

The information regarding the fee structure of individual IISERs is available at the web-sites of respective

IISERs.

Q15: Can I be a day-scholar at IISERs?

No. IISERs are fully residential campuses and students are required to stay in campus hostels.

Q16: Are all candidates satisfying the eligibility criteria admitted to IISERs?

No. Admission to IISERs is based on

(1) Ranking in KVPY.

(2) Ranking in JEE (Advanced) 2013

(3) Merit in the Aptitude test conducted by IISERs

Q17: How do I make my choice of IISER?

You will be asked to give your preferences in the application form.

Q18: Do I get the IISER of my choice?

The allotment is purely on the basis of the applicant's preferences and the ranks as mentioned in Q16.

Q19: Can I transfer my admission from one IISER to another at any time?

NO. Allotment to an IISER is final. No application for transfer to another IISER will be entertained.

Q20: Is there a fee for counseling?

Yes. A non-refundable fee to be paid in cash at the time of counseling. The amount is

(1) Rs. 1200/- for General/OBC/PD applicants

(2) Rs. 600/- for SC/ST applicants

Q21: When and where will the counseling be held?

You can choose any one of the IISERs for counseling while applying. Counseling dates for different

channels will be announced on this web-site in due course.

Q22: Will all applicants be called for counseling?

No. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for counseling.

Q23: Is there an interview at the time of counseling?

No.

Q24: What is the curriculum structure for BS-MS dual degree programme?

For the first four semesters, all students will take common courses in all disciplines (Biology, Chemistry,

Physics, Mathematics & Humanities). From the fifth semester onwards, one may opt for courses in one or

more areas. The final year will be devoted to a research project.

Q25: What are the important dates for IISER admissions?

Q27: What is the format of the Aptitude Test?

It is a three hour test comprising of 60 multiple choice questions – 15 each from Biology, Chemistry,

Mathematics and Physics. For each correct answer 3 marks will be awarded for a each wrong answer 1 mark

will be deducted.

Q29: Is the IISER Aptitude Test on-line?

No.

Q30: Where is the IISER Aptitude Test conducted?

Candidates may appear for the Aptitude Test at one of the five IISERs. The choice of IISER where a candidate

wants to appear for Aptitude Test and counseling needs to be indicated at the time of filling on-line application

form.

Q31: Is signing the declaration by a parent/guardian on the application form a must?

Signing the declaration on the application form by the candidate and his/her parent/guardian is a must. In

case the declaration is not signed by the candidate or his/her parent/guardian the application will be

considered incomplete and we will not be able to process it further. A false information provided by the

applicant in the application form, declaration form or any of the supporting documents will lead to the

forfeiture of the candidature at any stage of the admission process.
